How Often Should I Change My Hearing Aid Domes?

Hearing aid domes are small silicone tips that sit in your ear canal and play a crucial role in sound delivery and comfort. Knowing when to replace them is one of the most important aspects of hearing aid maintenance — and one of the most commonly asked questions we hear.

The General Rule: Every 1–3 Months

Most audiologists recommend replacing your hearing aid domes every 1 to 3 months, depending on how often you wear your aids and your individual ear environment. However, you should inspect them more frequently — ideally every week — and replace them sooner if you notice any of the following:

• Visible discolouration or yellowing
• Cracks, tears, or deformation in the silicone
• Wax or debris build-up that can't be cleaned off
• Reduced sound quality or a feeling that the dome has lost its seal
• Discomfort or irritation in the ear canal

Why Regular Dome Changes Matter

Old or damaged domes can cause a range of problems. A poor seal leads to sound leakage and feedback (whistling), while wax-clogged domes muffle sound and reduce clarity. Worn domes can also harbour bacteria, increasing the risk of ear infections. Replacing them regularly keeps your hearing aids performing at their best and protects your ear health.

How to Change Your Hearing Aid Dome

1. Wash and dry your hands thoroughly.
2. Hold the hearing aid receiver (the thin wire or tube) firmly.
3. Gently pull the old dome straight off — do not twist.
4. Check the receiver tip for any wax or debris and clean if needed.
5. Push the new dome firmly onto the receiver tip until it clicks or sits flush.
6. Give it a gentle tug to make sure it's secure before inserting into your ear.

Tips for Extending Dome Life

While regular replacement is essential, you can get the most out of each dome by wiping them gently with a dry cloth after each use, storing your hearing aids in a dry case overnight, and avoiding exposing them to hairspray, sunscreen, or other chemicals.
